Smarter Shoulders: A Classical Pilates Essential Workshop
Too many women in the Pilates community — instructors and dedicated students alike — are developing shoulder injuries that didn't need to happen. The exercises aren't the problem; it's the biomechanics behind how people are doing them. Misunderstood cues and compensatory patterns turn what should be safe, strengthening movements into repetitive strain. I designed this workshop to change that.
We start with what's actually happening in the shoulder joint — not the simplified version, the real architecture. With the help of Otto Von Bones (my teaching skeleton and longest-tenured assistant), we'll map how the bones and muscles of the shoulder, shoulder blade, ribcage, and spine work together as a system. This is where the "pull your shoulders down and back" cue falls apart, and where smarter movement begins.
Then we put it into the work. We'll move through exercises in Joe's system — using the method itself to retrain how the shoulder organizes under load. You'll start to see the patterns and compensations that have been hiding in plain sight — and understand what they're telling you. When the biomechanics are right, exercises you thought you already knew start to feel entirely different.
This workshop is built for instructors and committed Pilates students who want to understand the why behind the work. You'll leave with a sharper eye, better language, smarter cueing, and a body that stops working against its own shoulders.
Designed for teachers and committed Pilates students ready to go deeper. Curiosity required. Perfect shoulders not!
*All participants will receive a workshop packet, including printed handouts, reference materials, and journaling space for notes during the session.
